FAQs
Why work with a boutique compliance consultancy?

Our experience tells us that working with a boutique consultancy, such as Judd, provides a richer client experience because (1) advice / support is specific to your business, and (2) the client relationship truly matters to the consultancy.  We can take the time to understand each client’s business.

Judd was established with the aim of returning to the fundamentals of Compliance consulting namely:

(1) technical expertise and experience, combined with (2) capacity to do the work.

We pride ourselves on offering an opinion and solutions to our clients – cut and paste of the FCA rulebook is not compliance consultancy.

Unlike many larger competitors, we are independently owned and managed and do not mandate a specific service or solution on our clients. We do not have a minimum contract value. We provide a fit for purpose solution that is tailored to the client and matches the objectives set by them.

Do you have the capacity? I should just appoint a larger team that can cope with the work.

Our client to consultant ration is approximately 5:1, we know this to be one of the best in the industry, especially when compared to larger, longer established competitors. So we have greater capacity than many other compliance consultancies.

The ratio is monitored on a monthly basis and we hire ahead of demand, so that staff have the time necessary to work with our clients. Each client relationship is looked after by at least 2 consultants to ensure sufficient coverage throughout the year regardless of other commitments or temporary absence (holiday, sickness, etc).

Our team is hired with our culture and ethos in mind and each senior individual brings extensive experience from both in-house roles and well-established consultancies. At Judd, we attract highly skilled and seasoned professionals who are not only experts in their fields but also entrepreneurial in spirit—driven to innovate and take initiative.

What about staff turnover at Judd?

In over two years of operating we have had no employees leave Judd. We know this is important to our clients who want to work with consultants who have come to understand their business and with whom they have built a close working relationship. We have hired consultants ourselves when in-house, so we know how painful it is when consultant turnover is high. Our model of recurring relationships being staffed by at least 2 consultants means that in the unlikely event someone does leave Judd the transition would be seamless.

Giving our team the time needed so they are professionally proud of the deliverable rather than a rushed, off the shelf result, mitigates staff turnover risk. Employees work in their areas of expertise where they are most effective and have a range of different projects, so they learn and benefit from a varied portfolio of clients. We spend a lot of time on creating the right culture at Judd, such as training, team offsites, social events and regular team meetings, to again reduce staff attrition.

I should just appoint a brand name – no one can criticise me then.

Regardless of brand recognition or reputation, a consultancy is only as strong as the consultants that deliver the work. At Judd, each client works with our senior consultants on an ongoing basis, each of whom have both senior in-house Compliance and consulting experience. The senior team do not disappear once the contract is signed. Whichever consultancy you choose to appoint, always ask to meet the consulting team that will work with your firm.

Across the whole team we have an average of > 18 years of compliance experience. Our junior staff assist their experienced colleagues, they do not manage client relationships and are not put in positions where they are out of their depth. Judd solely provides compliance and regulatory services in markets and parts of the industry where we have the expertise. This ensures we focus our time on providing the best possible service.

Do you have a proper infrastructure to support your compliance consulting?

We have a robust infrastructure proportionate to our size. This includes;

  • A dedicated Operations Manager without client facing responsibilities to enable the consulting team to focus on client relationships;
  • We have appointed external, independent management accountants / tax advisers (TC Citroen Wells) and corporate lawyers (Freeths);
  • RFA provide full scope IT Service Management. RFA are a recognised leading IT provider to the financial services and alternative investment sectors; and
  • Our staff are subject to the firm’s personal trading and confidentiality policies. We undertake Cyber security training, phishing and penetration testing.

We are committed to reinforcing this infrastructure as we continue to grow.

How do you stay up to date with regulatory developments?

Tracking the regulatory horizon is a fundamental element of what we do for all our clients. We have all held in-house roles, so we appreciate how important it is to stay on top of regulatory changes.  We write industry alerts and thought leadership pieces and host client events on matters that are important to our industry – the focus is on relevant and quality, over quantity.

We hold membership of industry groups and our work with regulators on behalf of clients gives us insights into regulators’ areas of focus and concern in the sector. We work closely with many of the well-known law firms and accountants in the sector and will often share industry insight and knowledge with them and other industry partners. The Judd team meets weekly to share regulatory updates and discuss the impact upon our clients.

Am I alone in appointing Judd Advisory?

Judd Advisory is a well-established compliance consultancy with a strong foundation, successfully operating for over two years with careful and considered growth. We have built a trusted reputation, working with over 25 clients—including major names in the alternatives industry—who can provide references upon request. We work in partnership with the leading prime brokers, lawyers and accountancy firms for the benefit of our clients. Our success has been built on long standing relationships and then delivering on our commitments – we are not prepared to jeopardise our own hard-won reputations for short term gain. Our proven expertise and client trust set us apart. We have ambitious, yet pragmatic, plans to grow and strengthen what we do best, i.e. provide quality service to our customers.
